At Mount Ridley College, the Health and Physical Education (HPE) program is designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to lead active, healthy and fulfilling lives. Our curriculum offers a diverse and dynamic range of physical activities, traditional and non-traditional sports, and leadership opportunities that promote physical, social and emotional development across all year levels.
In the Early Years Mini School (Prep – Year 4), students are introduced to fundamental movement through structured developmental programs. This includes the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP), a targeted initiative delivered in Prep that focuses on enhancing coordination, balance and spatial awareness – essential building blocks for future sporting success. As students’ progress, they continue to develop their Fundamental Motor Skills in a safe, engaging and supportive environment.
Within the Junior and Middle Years (Years 5–9), students explore a wide range of team and individual sports that foster physical literacy, teamwork and resilience. Our curriculum is grounded in game sense pedagogy, encouraging tactical understanding and strategic thinking through modified games. Students also have opportunities to take on coaching or officiating roles, further developing leadership, communication and organisational skills.
In Year 10, Health and PE is a compulsory subject for one semester, with students also offered the opportunity to pursue it as a full-year elective. The elective program allows students to deepen their engagement in areas of interest through the following offerings:
Please note that some electives involve a participation cost due to the use of offsite community facilities.
In the Senior Years (Years 11–12), students have access to a range of specialised HPE pathways, supporting both academic and vocational aspirations. Our senior offerings include:
Across all year levels, our HPE program places a strong emphasis on student engagement, community connection and lifelong participation in physical activity. We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, personal growth and excellence both in and beyond the classroom.
The activities and skills acquired during class time are enhanced as students are provided with the opportunity to represent Mount Ridley College in their preferred sport. This is done through our Interschool Sports Competition that is played in the
Mickleham Division where numerous teams have sought success not only at this division but also at the Northern Metropolitan Region and State levels in Basketball, Netball, Badminton, Rugby League and AFL.
As the student population at Mount Ridley College continues to expand, so too does the range of facilities available for not only
PE classes but also for students to utilise during recess and lunch times.
