Middle Years

Welcome to the Middle Years Mini School.

We support and nurture our Years 8 and 9 students in an aspirational environment.  We occupy the Brighton, Mareeba and Ardsley buildings of Mount Ridley College, and our Mini School Office is also situated within this area.  This structure supports our students in feeling safe and connected to the Middle School environment.

The Middle Years are a critical time in adolescence, and we aim to inspire and encourage our students to explore their futures by setting long and short term goals.  This contributes to their overall preparedness to enter the Senior Years with a skill set that will ensure success in the rigour of the programs that lie ahead.

Students are encouraged to try a variety of different subjects in the areas of Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities, Art, Technology, Physical Education and Health, and Languages, (Italian or Japanese).  This is the opportunity for them to ‘taste test’ and determine where their strengths, interests and passions lie prior to entering the Senior School.

Our Middle School offers a number of programs that support students in their learning.  Teachers use a variety of assessment tools to determine where our students are at in their learning journeys, and how they can target their teaching strategies to support the specific needs of the student.  Students who are ahead or behind their expected levels of learning, may be eligible for intervention programs such as High Achievers, Reading Recovery or Numeracy Support to name a few.  These programs are flexible and change to support the needs of our current cohorts.

To support the social and emotional wellbeing of our students we have a Student Engagement Team that includes access to student counsellors.  This team is also responsible for providing opportunities and programs which target a range of wellbeing issues such as, resilience, anger management, and art therapy to name a few.  There are also chill out spaces in the Middle Years Mini School available to students who need down time.

The Middle Years Mini School is very well structured with a Leading Teacher allocated to Middle Years Mini School Curriculum and another one to Middle School Student Engagement.  They are responsible for managing teams of Middle Managers.  There is also a Mini School Assistant Principal who oversees all aspects of the Mini School including the day-to-day operations, as well as the strategic planning.  Any of these members of staff are available for meetings or phone conversations to ensure that we are working with you to provide the best level of education for your child.

In the Middle School, we aim to create a culture of care, collaboration and aspiration to achieve success for our students.
